Pecan Storage Tips

In-shell Pecans

In-shell pecans are able to be stored for a longer period of time than shelled pecans. To store in-shell pecans, pale in an airtight container or zip lock bag, and then place them in a paper bag. Keep it in a cool, dry area. Refrigerating in-shell pecans could extend and preserve the flavor for up to 6 months. If you plan to store them for a longer amount of time, freeze these pecans for up to 2 years.

Cracked Pecans

Cracked pecans are stored in the exact same way as in-shell pecans. However, cracked pecans are more exposed to other odors in the refrigerator/freezer and will absorb these odors the longer they sit.

Shelled Pecans

Shelled pecans are especially prone to spoiling and require a higher level of storage requirements. To maintain their flavor and color, you are battling with the odors and aromas of your pantry/storage preference. Double bag and freeze shelled pecans in small, recipe-ready amounts.

Defrosting is not required as pecans are ready to be used as soon as they are removed from storage. However, please remember to taste for freshness before use. Poor storage conditions will create a darkening of the nut as well as create rancidity of the oils, which destroys the natural flavor and aroma of the pecan.
